You’re vacationing in Europe, but can’t keep your mind off that Lost episode you just missed. Sure, the homemade DVR recorded it - but you want it now! Don’t worry, friend, a little program known as Hamachi has you covered.

Hamachi

Hamachi takes your home network and puts it on steroids. Technically, it creates a Virtual Private Network, but there is nothing technical about Hamachi’s setup. In fact, with it’s nice tutorial, it might be one of the easiest installs you ever experience.

Setup Your Network

  1. Click the network button
  2. Click “Create a new network…”
  3. Enter a network name and password.
  4. Now join this network from your other computers.

Browse Your Network

  1. Right click a computer.
  2. Select browse.
  3. A window opens up, allowing you to browse shared folders.

Firewall Alert

The only trouble I ran into was getting Zonealarm to let Hamachi through. To do this, in Zonealarm, change the Hamachi adapter so that it’s in your “trusted” zone. This is under “Firewall->Zones.” Easy once you know what to do.

Watch Your Recorded Shows From Anywhere

Now you can stream music, videos, and any other shared files to any computer in the world! This means Linux and OSX too. My wife uses it to listen to our iTunes library while she’s at school. It’s beautiful. And it’s another awesome reason to build your own DVR.
