Logitech X-530: Value HTPC speakers

I finally hooked my first HTPC up and popped Star Wars into the DVD drive, ready to enjoy the galaxy far, far away. Unfortunately, the sound running out of my TV’s speakers didn’t quite cut like a lightsaber. I immediately looked in to some affordable computer speakers to up my HTPC’s audio game.

My Needs

My requirements were: 5.1 surround sound, something under $100, decent sound (I know this is the budget zone).

Enter the X-530’s

Luckily Logitech makes a system that fits this bill perfectly. The X-530’s are 5.1 computer speakers that retail for like $80 (I got mine on eBay for $43 - with shipping!). The sound is great (especially since I was using TV speakers) and loud enough for an apartment. If you’re looking to take a cheap step up in the sound department, these are probably your answer.

Downside?

Well, the system is designed for a desktop setting, so those rear speakers will require some extension. The bass isn’t huge, but I’m not running a hip-hop club so that’s fine ;). The cabling is a little complex and certainly messier than necessary (why is there a VGA cable connecting the right speaker to the sub?). But really, the x-530’s are probably the best deal you’re going to get. Some serious value, especially if you find the right eBay auction.
